The eThekwini Municipality has finally reopened some Durban beaches, just ahead of the busy summer season. Here are the ones that are open…
Durban beaches open to public once more
The majority of Durban’s beaches have finally been reopened for public use, after they were effectively shut down since August because of an E.coli scare.
Based on the advice of experts, spokesperson Musawenkosi Mayisela said that the water quality had improved and was suitable for recreational activities.
This comes after the eThekwini municipality closing and opening beaches citing high levels of E.coli and banning water activities such as swimming, surfing, fishing, bathing, canoeing, and others.

As per the Mayisela, the following Blue Flag beaches have been reopened:
- Point beach
- uShaka beach
- Addington beach
- North beach
- Brighton beach
- South beach
- Wedge beach
- Bay of Plenty beach
- Battery beach
- Country Club beach
- Reunion beach
- Pipeline beach
- Toti Main beach
- Warner beach
According to Travel News, the closure is still in place for Westbrook beach, Bronze beach, Laguna beach, Thekwini beach, Umhlanga beach, uMdloti beach and uMgababa beach.
Mayisela also added that regular assessments of water quality at the beaches were continuing, to ensure public safety.
