The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Friday, 2 December. The warning key indicates there is a high likelihood of minor weather-based impacts.

WEATHER WARNING FOR KZN
The thunderstorm warning is valid from 15:00 until 22:00 on Friday. A band of thunderstorms is hovering over the southwestern parts of the province. The weather service expects the stormy weather to last until the evening with even more thunderstorms anticipated in the east.
“These storms are expected to be accompanied by strong winds, heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning,” said the weather service.
The potential impacts of the thunderstorms include:
- Flooding of roads and low-lying bridges in locality.
- Damage to infrastructure, settlements and vehicles due to hail.
- Injuries to livelihood (e.g. crops) and livestock due to hail.
- Fire incidents are likely due to severe lightning. This also presents a risk of injury to humans and livestock.
- Injuries due to flying debris, in locality.
