Cape Town has taken FIVE titles at the World Travel Awards Africa leg this past weekend. Here’s what the city walked away with…
The World Travel Awards Africa leg took place this past Saturday, 15 October 2022, at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre in Kenya, where the Africa & Indian Ocean winners were announced. The international event is widely seen as the “Oscars’” of the travel and tourism sector, so the Mother City winning big is big news.

What did Cape Town win?
The city was named Africa’s Leading City Destination of the year, while the Silo Hotel and Cape Town International Airport took Africa’s Leading Design AND Leading Luxury Hotel and Africa’s Leading Airport, respectively.
Table Mountain itself scooped the title of Africa’s Leading Attraction for the fourth year in a row.
According to EWN, the cities most iconic landmark was pitted against other incredible nominees like Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza, Mount Kilimanjaro and more locally, the V&A Waterfront and Robben Island.
Wahida Parker, managing director at Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, said that Table Mountain faced some worthy contenders.
“We faced some very worthy competitors, especially from our hometown heroes such as Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront,” Parker said.
“Most of the nominees in our category were from Cape Town, which shows again what a wonderful and successful mix of attractions we have in the Mother City,” Parker added.
Parker also said that they’re now chasing the big prize.
“We are chasing the crown, which is to be the leading attraction of the world. We are chasing the crown, which is to be the leading attraction of the world.We are calling for public support for our two nominations in the World leg of the World Travel Awards. This round of voting is open and closes at the end of this week.” she said.
Voting is an online platform that can be accessed at The World Travel Awards and is open to members of the public as well as tourism and travel professionals.
