City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has shared tips on how retailers and shoppers can ensure fire and life safety on Black Friday.
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has called on retailers and shoppers to ensure fire and life safety on Black Friday, 25 November 2022.
Normally on Black Friday shoppers who are looking to score savings on valued items that they intend to purchase flock to some retailers in larger than normal numbers, possibly overcrowding the capacity of some retail outlets.
RETAILERS AND SHOPPERS URGED TO ENSURE SAFETY THIS BLACK FRIDAY
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has called on retailers have a plan for the following:
- Manage overcrowding that may lead to possible stampedes
- Ensure that escape routes are not obstructed
- Ensure that firefighting equipment is not obstructed
- Ensure that an updated evacuation and emergency plan is in place
- Ensure the safe stacking of goods in storage areas and inside retail outlets

The emergency services department also shared some tips for shoppers that could come in handy during their shopping spree:
- Cooperate with security officers controlling queues at retail outlets
- Avoid any situation that may lead to a stampede
- Ensure that daily doses of chronic medication are taken before going shopping
- Stay well hydrated during long shopping periods
- Be mindful of children becoming suffocated in overcrowded spaces
- Be mindful of forklifts in retail outlets where such may be in operation
City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson, Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said Fire Safety Officers will be visible in various regions to monitor retail outlets.
