The Presidency announced that Tuesday, 27 December, will be a public holiday in 2022, on Thursday morning, 8 December.
27 DECEMBER DECLARED A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Christmas Day falls on Sunday and the Day of Goodwill – another day off – falls on Monday, 26 December.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared 27 December a public holiday in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act (Act No 36 of 1994).
“Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act provides that ‘whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday,’” read a statement by the Presidency.
In 2016, Christmas day also fell on a Sunday and COSATU lobbied then-President Jacob Zuma for an extra paid public holiday and he agreed.
Earlier this year, another trade union, FEDUSA, petitioned President Ramaphosa to provide South Africans with their full 12 paid public holidays, which the Public Holidays Act says they are entitled to.
