The popular Cape Town surfing spot of Surfers Corner in Muizenberg saw a little bit of shark drama on Tuesday, 22 February.
Incredible scenes played out at popular Cape Town surfing spot Surfers Corner in Muizenberg on Tuesday.
In a Twitter post by well-known local surfer Deon Bing, fisherman can be seen frantically – and bravely – trying to free a number of sharks trapped in trek nets full of yellowtail.
At one point a seagull swoops in to steal a fish and curious onlookers gathered to watch what was going on.
ONE HOPES THE SHARKS WERE ALL FREED IN MUIZENBERG
One can only hope that all the trapped sharks were freed safely.
Surfers who gather daily at the spot must be wide-eyed at the number of sharks in the vicinity at present! Check out the video below:
Bronze-Whaler Sharks
According to the Shark Spotters’ Twitter page, Bronze whaler shark (also known as copper shark) sightings in the False Bay area have increased since 2018. This particular species population size is also unknown, and along with the species low growth and reproductive rate, they are Near Threatened on the IUCN’s Red List.
