LATEST WEATHER REPORT FOR TUESDAY 30 AUGUST – HOW COLD WILL IT GET IN SA?
Sub-zero temperatures will be felt as early as 21:00 this evening. That’s according to forecasting experts Ventusky, whose data is already giving us the chills! Shortly after midnight, significantly cold temperatures will be felt in a number of rural spots.
As we head further into the night, it’s understood that five provinces will feel the bite of these icy conditions. The Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and KZN will all be at the mercy of heavy frosts, with Lesotho also bracing itself for a plunge in temperatures.

ICY-SPOTS FOR TONIGHT: WHERE TO FIND THE SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES
Between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00, the most extreme of the weather is expected to occur. In parts of KZN and Free State, individual temperatures could drop to -7°C. This would be the coldest reading of the night, giving locals something to shiver about.
- Western Cape: A small corner of the Western Cape, in the extreme north-east, is on course for lows of -2°C. Murraysburg and Restvale will be the regional cold-spots here, but temperatures will largely remain above freezing elsewhere.
- Northern Cape: From eastern parts of Sutherland through to the town of Colesburg, regions in the south and south-east of this province will experience sub-zero temperatures. Areas bordering the Western Cape could see thermometers record -3°C tonight.
- KZN: In what promises to be one of the coldest parts of the country overnight on 30/31 August, Himeville AND Underberg – near the border with Lesotho – are forecast to reach -6°C. Western parts of the province will be blighted by the ‘big freeze’.
- Free State: Any KZN can do, Free State is able to do better. The border town of Wepener is projected to shiver at -7°C. Harrismith, Botshabelo, and Smithfield will all see the mercury slide towards -2°C.
- Eastern Cape: You’re looking at lows of -5°C in Barkly East, with Steynsburg and Queenstown breaching the -3°C mark.
