A popular Cape Town eatery has taken home The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ prestigious Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023.
The world’s best sustainable restaurant
Cape Town is home to some of the most popular and incredible restaurants in the world, and now one of the Mother City’s fabulous eateries has been named the ‘Best Sustainable Restaurant in the world‘.
According to Getaway, the prestigious Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023, awarded by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, has been bestowed upon renowned fine dining establishment, Fyn Restaurant.
Described by the publication as ‘An ethical celebration of uniquely South African ingredients,’ Fyn’s unique South African-Japanese cuisine has a ‘far-reaching philosophy that influences every aspect of the dining experience’.
“The Sustainable Restaurant Award is given to the restaurant that achieves the highest environmental and social responsibility rating as determined by 50 Best’s audit partner, the Sustainable Restaurant Association. All restaurants on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 1-100 list were invited to enter the award via self-nomination and each entry was assessed across three main pillars: sourcing, society and environment.” World’s 50 Best Restaurants wrote.
Fabulous Fyn: One of the Mother City’s best
Fyn (prounounced ‘fayn’) was opened by chef Peter Tempelhoff with culinary director Ashley Moss and service and beverage director Jennifer Hugé in 2019 and quickly became one of Cape Town’s culinary gems.
The restaurant even placed in the top 50 restaurants in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2022, coming in at number 37 – quite a feat for such a new restaurant.
“With over 50 per cent of Fyn’s menu readily suitable for vegetarians or vegans and endemic vegetables taking centre stage, the restaurant is doubling down on its sustainable philosophy while also upholding the highest standards of flavour and technique, making it a worthy winner of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023.” The World’s 50 Best Restaurants added.
