The highest-grossing female-directed film at the domestic box office (opening weekend) is $162,022,044 (R2,860,928,545.24) and was achieved by Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig (USA), released on 21 July 2023.
This surpassed the highest total of $153,433,423 (R2,709,488,488.43)for Captain Marvel (2019), co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The previous highest-grossing film with a solo female director was Wonder Woman (2017), directed by Patty Jenkins, which grossed $103,251,471 (R 1,822,455,576.61) at the domestic box office on its opening weekend.
