The heaviest onion weighs 8.97 kg (19 lb 12.4 oz) and was grown by Gareth Griffin (UK). It was assessed by judges from the National Vegetable Society at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK, on 15 September 2023.
This beat a record that had stood since 2014: Tony Glover (UK) grew an onion that weighed 8.5 kg (18 lb 11.84 oz), also assessed at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, on 12 September 2014.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Griffin (who lives in Guernsey in the Channel Islands) had been growing onions for about 25 years. He’s been seriously attempting to beat the heaviest onion record for about 13 years, after witnessing a previous title holder grown by competitive veg legend and multiple record holder Peter Glazebrook.
