Lufthansa has just announced an exciting update to its Frankfurt, Germany to Mbombela Kruger National Park direct route. Here’s what’s new…
Frankfurt to Kruger: New direct flights from Lufthansa
In an announcent earlier this year, Lufthansa’s long-haul leisure brand, Eurowings Discover, was to become the very first intercontinental airline to begin scheduled flights to South Africa’s Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA). The route was initially planned as a purely seasonal route, starting 15 November 2022 to 25 March 2023, but it is now being updated to a year-round service for 2023.
The scheduled service will directly and conveniently link tourists to the Kruger National Park, which has proven to be a very popular choice for German holidaymakers.
According to Travel News, Dr André Schulz, General Manager Southern & East Africa for Lufthansa, says that the positive travel rebound poast-pandemic is the reason behind the change, claiming that the Lufthansa Group had recently reported that their second-quarter preliminary results reflected that they had once again returned to profits.
He added that these positive results further allowed Lufthansa Group to continue expanding their network and services to customers around the world, with particular focus on Africa.
A boost for Kruger tourism
The service will undoubtedly be incredibly beneficial for the residents of the region, bringing in much-needed tourism after the last two years. The nearby cities of Maputo in Mozambique and Mbabane in eSwatini will also likely see some benefit, with both cities being only 200km away from Kruger.
Helmut Woelfel, Chief Commercial Officer of Eurowings Discover said:
“It’s needless to emphasise the attractiveness and popularity of South Africa among European holidaymakers. Our booking figures show that travellers from all over Europe are increasingly drawn to the vastness and beauty of the African continent. We are therefore relying on a versatile Africa programme this year and will continue to expand it in the future.”
The new direct service will begin on 15 November, operating three times a week, with a short stopover in Windhoek before arrival in South Africa.
The flight will depart Frankfurt, Germany on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday evenings, arriving in Mbombela KNP the following afternoon. The return flights from Mbombela KNP will depart on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sunday afternoons, arriving in Frankfurt the following morning.
