The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, which borders Botswana at the top of the North West province, is one of South Africa’s hidden safari gems. While the safari experiences at Madikwe are truly incredible, the game lodges within the reserve itself are certainly something to write home about. Here are few to check out!
Thakadu River Camp, Madikwe
The stylish Thakadu River Camp is a luxury favourite for its serene setting on the Marico River. The 12 on-site tented suites are ideal for all types of guests, from families to honeymooners. The treetop lodges discreetly blend into the surroundings and the suites have a unique Afro-Asian style. Guests can enjoy guided birding, stargazing, bush dining or a spa treatment on the deck. It’s also a wholly-owned, community-based safari camp that substantially benefits the community.
Mosetlha Bush Camp
Mosetlha Bush Camp is a family-owned eco-camp. The unfenced camp offers accommodation for a maximum of 16 guests in nine charming safari-style raised wooden chalets with twin beds. The cabins are partly open on the side, so you can have the experience of sleeping under the stars while still having a roof over your head! The cabins are clustered around a central campfire and lapa area. Cabins are not en-suite but bathrooms (safari showers with hot water from donkey boilers) are discreetly situated between cabins. All meals are prepared on an open fire with potjie pots and braai grids – traditional and delicious.
If you prefer the exclusivity of having your own space and the option to self-cater, Rockfig Lodge is for you. Modern and luxurious suites and chalets sleep from two to six guests, some with private decks, splash pools and swimming pools. The privately-owned lodge also allows you to design your own unique safari adventure – providing you with personal, treasured experiences.
Tau Game Lodge, Madikwe
Tau Game Lodge was built in 1995 and overlooks a vast natural waterhole, which tends to attract a variety of game, as does the diverse vegetation that thrives in the fertile topsoil of the area. Luxury guaranteed, the lodge offers a comfortable lounge, bar and dining room which are semi open-air and overlooks the natural waterhole. Accommodation options include standard and deluxe chalets, as well as family units and family suites – all tastefully decorated and offering amazing views. Tau, which is the Twane word for “lion”, makes use of the natural resources of the surrounding area to provide accommodation and an experience like no other.
