Big news! The gorgeous town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape has made Time Magazine’s prestigious ‘World’s Greatest Places’ 2022 list.
Franschhoek: A wine lover’s dream
Effectively dubbed ‘a wine lover’s dream’ by the publication, the idyllic town of Franschhoek has made Time Magazine’s prestigious list of ‘World’s Greatest Places’ for 2022.
The World’s Greatest Places list catalogues 50 extraordinary destinations from all around the world that Time’s international network of correspondents and contributors nominated for exploring, because of their offer of “new and exciting experiences”.
The resulting list showcases 50 far-flung and familiar spots, from the Great Barrier Reef, with it’s undersea wonders, to the ultra-high-tech city of Seoul, South Korea.
But what’s getting South Africans all abuzz is the the fact that our very own Franschhoek made the 2022 list! Lying in the fertile Huguenot valley, Franschhoek, as we South Africans know, is a delightful little part of the Winelands with so much to offer, and Time Magazine has taken full note of that. The magazine’s feature highlights the wonderful wine, food, accommodation and scenic offerings of the area.
Mireille Wenger, Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, said that this does well to put the Western Cape on the map.
“This is excellent news, which once again puts a Western Cape destination on the world-map, at precisely the time we are looking to boost our visitor numbers far beyond their 2019 levels.” she said.
Wenger added that in the past week, they had learnt how the province’s visitor numbers from key source markets were finally recovering to pre-pandemic levels. She also highlighted the two Western Cape restaurants that made the global top 100 restaurants on the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List.
“This reminds us that there is still so much on offer in our beautiful province, with its diversity of experiences being amongst the best in the world. I encourage South Africans, in particular, to get out and see the beauty our province has to offer.” Wenger added.
CEO of Franschhoek Tourism, Ruth McCourt also welcomed the wonderful news, saying that the region continues to strive for and celebrates the diversity of this unique village that attracts both local and international visitors and puts the whole of South Africa on the world tourism stage.
