The African Airlines Association (Afraa) will soon join a new initiative from IATA to help develop Africa through aviation.
African aviation to get a boost
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the African Airlines Association (Afraa) have announced that Afraa will be joining IATA’s Focus Africa initiative. This initiative is a collaboration that is expected to help give Africa a boost via the aviation industry.

The initiative aims to maximise the contribution of aviation to development across the continent by improving passenger and freight services, reports Tourism Update. The stakeholders, both public and private,in Focus Africa aim to deliver noticeable improvements in six essential areas, including:
- safety,
- infrastructure,
- connectivity,
- finance and distribution,
- sustainability and
- skills development.

“Afraa strengthens the Focus Africa coalition as we work to increase aviation’s role in Africa’s development. This has enormous promise. The continent is home to the world’s most rapidly growing population but accounts for just 2% of air passenger and cargo transport activity. The road to realising aviation’s potential will be long. But with the strong partnerships committed to Focus Africa, we can, and we will realise the needed change.”
BRICS Aviation Working Group conference takes place
In other aviation news, the BRICS Summit brought with it the BRICS Aviation Working Group conference, which ended this week with a passionate commitment to encouraging co-operation, connectivity and long-term expansion in the aviation industry.
At the conference, the Group focused their efforts on specific interventions that will help foster air connectivity between the BRICS countries. These interventions included:
- Strengthening airport infrastructure, which includes modernising terminals, expanding runways,and deploying advanced technologies to enhance passenger experience and efficiency,
- Advancing aircraft manufacturing co-operation,
- Elevating aircraft servicing and maintenance,
- Enabling technical training programmes and
- Fostering supporting industries.
