Visitors tend to mainly be drawn to the Vredefort crater just outside the little town, but there’s much more to be seen and done in Parys and its surrounds.
Skydiving
Why you should experience it: As far as daredevil pursuits go, skydiving is a definite bucket list item and it doesn’t get better than skydiving in Parys. Jump out of a plane at 11 000 feet above ground level and experience the ultimate view of the Vredefort dome and surrounds.

Vredefort crater
Why you should visit: More than two million years ago, an asteroid the size of Table Mountain hurtled towards the Earth and made impact just 16km away from, what is today, known as Parys. The crater or dome left behind, would become the largest verified impact crater on Earth and one of South Africa’s National Heritage sites. There are numerous activities to do in the area, from abseiling, hot-air ballooning, mountain and quad biking – an adventure-lovers dream come true really.
How to get there: Heading out of Parys, the crater is just 16km via the R723.
White water rafting
Why you should experience it: For an exhilarating experience, white water rafting on the Vaal is a must. Parys River Rafting offers a half day river rafting trip that consists of 7km of rapids on two man-inflatable rafts that will really have your adrenaline soaring.
How much does it cost: Half day trips cost R350 per person and includes qualified guides, safety equipment and transport from the base camp.

Walk through Breë Street
Why you should visit: Breë Street is a treasure trove of antiques, furniture, arts and crafts and unique gift shops. Stop by Pines Antiques, Fieterjasies antiques, Sikatonga and La Vie en Rose for special souvenirs or some tranquil time during your visit.
Parys Suspension Bridge
Why you should visit: The Parys Suspension Bridge is a unique attraction built in 1918 and crosses the Vaal river. Once used to connect golf island to the town, the bridge is now a popular tourist spot to hang a love lock.
