The South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Tuesday, 10 April, rubbished the re-emergence of a hoax weather video doing the rounds on social media. Claims made in the video suggest the country is in for icy conditions over the next ten days.

Weather Service confirms drop in temperatures but denies claims of extreme cold
The weather service said the false and misleading video, which says Witbank, Durban, Mooi River, Johannesburg, Secunda, and other areas will experience extreme cold, has circulated before.
“There is no snowfall expected in the next 10 days in the regions mentioned in the video…” said the weather service.
However, rain IS expected over the eastern parts of South Africa on Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 and 12 April.
“A cold front passing south of the country is expected to result in showers and rain along the south-west, the south coast and adjacent interior.
“While a drop in temperatures is expected in the interior of the Cape provinces, most of the Free State and the extreme southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal as a result of cold air from the south, the temperatures are expected to start warming in these regions from Sunday 16 April 2023,” said SAWS.
The public is encouraged to ignore the video and refrain from sharing it. The weather service publishes official warnings and alerts on its website (www.weathersa.co.za) and social media pages.
