Venice’s new entry fee

Visitors planning a trip to the romantic city of Venice will need to be aware of a soon-to-be imposed entry fee.

According to Schengenvisa.info, the Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has confirmed that Venice’s authorities have decided to impose a €5 (R100) fee for foreign visitors planning to enter the city.

As per reports, these plans to introduce restrictions have been on the cards since 2019, as part of efforts to reduce the massive amount of tourists that visit Venice every year.

The good news, however, is that this new fee will only be implemented as an experiment and only on certain days.

The city’s authorities will choose the days which they predict to be busiest, such as holiday weekends and peak Carnival periods.

As per the rules around the fee, only daytrippers aged 14 and above who wish to enter the city will be subject to the €5 fee.

Locals, commuters and those with second homes in the city who have paid local property tax, visitors who are staying overnight in the municipality and those participating in sports events, will all be excluded from the entry fee.
