The City of Cape Town is almost finished with the painting makeover of the iconic St James beach bathing boxes.

In November the city started replaced the derelict bathing boxes with new replicas, asking Capetonians to assist in choosing the new colours, choosing from seven options.

Tradition won out over change with respondents overwhelmingly voting to keep the original primary colours that have become synonymous with the False Bay beach over the years.

Some of the beach huts were destroyed in a fire in August 2020.
