The MyCiti Airport Service will come to an end on Thursday, 1 December. The City of Cape Town said demand for the service has not recovered since the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

CITY CUTS MYCITI AIRPORT ROUTE

The City intends to reallocate the buses that ran to the airport to higher-demand routes including lines that connect Atlantis with Table View and routes to and from Century City, and the Central Business District.

The municipal government also added that the significant increase in the price of diesel, which is up by 50.5% since 5 January, is one of the reasons for ending the service. Earlier this year, the City cut a number of MyCiti routes for the same reason.

“’It is regrettable and unfortunate that we have to suspend the Airport Service, but the City being a responsible and prudent administration, is obliged to allocate resources where it is much needed and in high demand. The provision of additional buses to high-demand areas will improve the day-to-day lives of regular commuters who have a great need for the MyCiTi service,” said MayCo Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The airport service may return in the future. Quintas said the City would investigate more cost-effective solutions.
