The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Extreme Discomfort heat Advisory due to sweltering temperatures in the Western Cape, on Wednesday, 7 December.
The advisory is valid from 10:00 until 18:00 on Thursday, 8 December. The weather service said scorching temperatures would make the conditions hard to deal with for some people.
The affected area includes the interior of the West Coast District. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of nearly 40 degrees in certain places.
“When temperature is extremely high, human’s ability to cool their bodies through sweating is reduced. This can be a real threat that leads to hyperthermia. People and animals can get heat exhaustion, heat stroke, faintness, dry skin and dehydration,” said the weather service.
The weather service typically advises residents to stay out of direct sunlight as far as possible during such periods of intense heat.
