Travelling? Beware of ‘Bali bonk ban’

One of the most popular island destinations in the world will be introducing a new sex law in the next three years. Bali, Indonesia’s beloved tourist destination, will become subject to legislation that outlaws sex outside marriage.

“The new code, which will apply to Indonesians and visiting foreigners alike and has prompted alarm from human rights campaigners, will also prohibit cohabitation between unmarried couples,” says the Guardian.

This new legislation will not apply immediately, but the old code will change over to a new one within three years.

“Sex outside of marriage will be punished with one year in prison, while unmarried people living together could face six months in jail,” news agency AFP also reports.

Labelled the ‘Bali bonk ban’ by some Australian media, the sex law has sparked much contention for Australian travellers in particular.

According to BBC, Indonesia’s economy relies quite heavily on tourism from neighbouring Australia, which was, in fact, Indonesia’s top tourist source before the pandemic.

“Thousands of people fly to the tropical island of Bali every month to bask in its warm weather, indulge in cheap Bintang beers and rave at all-night beach parties. Bali weddings are quite common, and thousands of Australia’s graduate students fly to Bali every year to celebrate finishing high school.” says BBC.
