Three Bloemfontein museums all culture vultures need to visit

Bloemfontein might be known for its beautiful blooms but any cuture vulture knows there’s lots more than just that. If you’re looking for a culture-filled activity in the city, here are a few fantastic museums you should definitely visit.

Anglo Boer War Museum

The War Museum, also known as the War Museum of the Boer Republics, in Bloemfontein doesn’t only allow visitors some insight into the Boer War with it’s unique art collection and exhibits, but it also brings the visitor closer to understanding the background against which the war took place. Anyone wanting to learn more about South African history should definitely visit this museum.

The National Museum of Bloemfontein

Established in 1877, the National Musuem of Bloemfontein is a natural and cultural history and art museum. You will find all sorts of displays here, including palaentology, archaeology, geology and astronomy exhibits, as well as exhibits on African culture and Bloemfontein history. There’s lots to see and you can spend a whole day just exploring the length and breadth of the museum.

Oliewenhuis Art Museum

Oliewenhuis, a Neo-Dutch style mansion is located in one of the most beautiful gardens in the city of Bloemfontein. It is said to be the only museum of its kind in the Free State and is one of the youngest art museums in the entire country. The museum collects, conserves and exhibits works of art which represent the art heritage of South Africa. Be sure to check out the Sculpture Park and Cement and Mosaic Project in the gardens.
