Cape Town has long been one of the world’s top tourist destinations, with Table Mountain scooping up awards for being one of the world’s best-loved natural attractions. In 2021, Cape Town was named one of the “Best Cities for Remote Working” by global housing rental platform Nestpick.

The City of Cape Town and Cape Town Tourism have launched incentives and campaigns to draw remote workers to the city in an effort to stimulate the tourism industry and the economy.

Perched on top of the mountain at the Upper Cableway Station, the brand new Table Mountain Cableway WiFi Lounge serves as a free WiFi hotspot.

Digital nomads and remote workers can purchase a TMACC Cable Card and make use of the WiFi Lounge which offers ample working space, refreshments and food, stable internet connectivity and of course, spectacular views.

REMOTE WORK TREND

Prior to 2020, work was confined by cultural and structural barriers. The pandemic has forced companies to break through these barriers through a fundamental operational shift where work can be combined with travel.

Remote working opportunities have increased exponentially since the onset of the pandemic, which ushered in the need to socially distance in order to minimize risks of COVID-19 infection.  The remote work phenomenon has enabled more individuals to become digital nomads and to work from any location they choose.

TOURISM DRAWCARD

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) managing director Wahida Parker said the emergence of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic was a valuable opportunity for South Africa’s tourism sector to draw in tourists and self-employed individuals from across the country and internationally.

“By making it easier for digital nomads to work in South Africa, the tourism sector will also be able to benefit from an influx of foreign tourists in the country, who are looking to explore all of South Africa’s breath-taking natural wonders,” said Parker, per Tourism Update.

TABLE MOUNTAIN CABLEWAY WIFI LOUNGE

Opening Hours: The lounge opens as the first cable car comes up and closes with the last car’s departure.

Entrance to the Lounge: FREE

First Car Up: 08:00 or 08:30
Last Car Up: Between 16:30 and 20:00
Last Car Down: Between 17:30 and 21:00
