Colourfully Queer: Cape Town unveils new rainbow crossing

Cape Town recently unveiled a fantastic rainbow pedestrian crossing in Green Point, in a bid to embrace diversity in the city.

Just days after the City of Tshwane unveiled a rainbow crossing in the central business district (CBD), Green Point in Cape Town is now also home to a bright and beautiful rainbow crossing! The project was unveiled by the Mother City’s mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis and mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN UNVEILS RAINBOW CROSSING

Green Point has been home to several LGBTQI+ events in the Mother City and now, it is also home to a stunning rainbow pedestrian crossing. The crossing is located at Somerset Road.

According to the City of Cape Town, the crossing is also painted with a pink strip which a guide for tourists and visitors as they explore the “iconic LGBTQI+” neighbourhood. The pink strip runs along Somerset Road, all the way through Liddle, Dixon, Waterkant, Rose and Strand Streets. 

“You cannot miss this Pink route, it is about 20cm wide and painted on the sidewalk. This is a fun way for visitors to get to know the area and a great addition to our tourist offering soon before the peak holiday season,” said Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

‘EMBRACING DIVERSITY’ IN CAPE TOWN

Hill-Lews added that the rainbow pedestrian crossing is meant to embrace diversity in Cape Town. Rob Quintas added that in the future, there could be more added in the future.

“We want all to feel welcome in our city where we embrace diversity and the addition of this bold pedestrian crossing to our road network will help spread this message. It also speaks to innovation in public spaces and support for public art that we’d like to foster,” he added. 

“This exciting ‘place maker’ precinct activator is the first of its kind in Cape Town, and is aimed at re-invigorating the buzz of the LGBTQIA+ district using road markings,” said Rob Quintas, the mayoral committee member for urban mobility. 

“There are many more spaces in the city that can be looked into in future and where heritage or unique attractions can be amplified by using sidewalks and pedestrian crossings.”
