We’ve been experiencing something of a winter wonderland since the beginning of June, with various snow events taking place across South Africa in the past few weeks – and the forecast for the week ahead suggests that even more of the white stuff is heading our way.

LATEST SNOW FORECAST FOR SOUTH AFRICA – WHERE WILL THE FLAKES FALL?

As we enter into the weekend, the possibility of snow will rise dramatically. Isolated parts of the Northern Cape, and several higher-ground regions in the Western Cape are predicted to get a smattering of snowflakes when the latest cold front drifts in from the coast.

  • Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl are in line to see snow-capped mountains.
  • Wellington, Worcester and Tulbagh could experience falling flakes within the next few days.
  • Between 1cm to 2cm could fall in Sutherland, Northern Cape ‘at some point in the week ahead’.
  • None of the snowfall is likely to be recorded in low-level locations, however.
Sutherland is something of a snow-chaser’s haven – and it is primed for a light dusting as we head into July!

CHASING THE SNOW: UPDATED FORECAST LOOKS PROMISING, BUT SUBJECT TO CHANGE

The start of July looks like it will be fairly chilly for those in south-west. Another deluge of rain is set to sweep across the Western Cape, before pushing into the far-south of the Northern Cape.

Forecasts from both Snow Report SA and Ventusky suggest that the snow remains on course to make landfall on either Saturday 2 July or Sunday 3 July. Current temperature projections suggest the mercury will drop considerably on Saturday night, paving the way for snow on Sunday morning.

Of course, trying to pinpoint when the snow will land in South Africa is far from an exact science – and these early forecasts can sometimes change completely within the blink of an eye. In the 21st century, predicting the weather comes with many, many pitfalls.

But based on the data we are seeing now, it looks as if the aforementioned regions will enjoy the sight of snowfall soon. Temperatures could drop to as low as -3C on Sunday evening, ensuring that teeth will be chattering in certain parts of the country…
