THE SNOW IS EXPECTED FROM TODAY

She furthermore said SIGNIFICANT snow of more than 10cm is likely on Wednesday over Lesotho and the southern Drakensberg continuing into Thursday morning.

HERE ARE THE TOP FIVE PLACES IN SA TO GO HUNT FOR SNOW:

  • Underberg: Snowfalls in the Underberg can occur anywhere from May through to October. The highest recorded snowfall in the area and, therefore, possibly the best time to go in search of snow is in August. Situated a mere 40 km from Underberg, Sani Pass is a great snow spot to explore, with the first winter snowfall having fallen there in late May this year. Be advised, though, that you need a 4 x 4 to drive up the pass.
  • Golden Gate: The winter months in Golden Gate are very cold, and temperatures can plummet to between -9 and -15°C. Snow is no stranger to this area.
  • Midlands: Winter in the Natal Midlands is cool and dry, with occasional snow and frost and average temperatures of 6°C. August 2021 saw the KZN Midlands transformed into a white-blanketed wonderland along with other large parts of SA previously untouched by it.

KEEP YOUR PETS WARM IN COLD WEATHER

As temperatures drop, it’s important to remember that our pets also feel the cold. Just like us, pets can be at risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and other winter-related hazards. Here are some tips to help keep your furry friend safe and warm during the colder months.

  1. Keep them indoors. If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet. Keep them inside where they can stay cozy and safe. Don’t leave pets in the car alone, as it can act like a refrigerator and hold in the cold air, which can result in your pet freezing and could lead to serious health concerns, including death.
  2. Protect their paws. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach. Your pet may step in ice, salt, and chemicals, which can be very painful. Massage petroleum jelly into your pet’s paw pads before going outside to help protect them from salt and chemical agents. Booties can also be effective in covering and protecting paws when out on walks.
