Plett Trails guides Garden Route hikers

Hikers, mountain bikers and nature enthusiasts will now be able to have accessible and user-friendly information in the form of an app when they’re exploring the Garden Route region of the Western Cape.

Plett Trails, the app, combines both nature and technology to help users navigate trails in the Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma and Harkerville areas while also keeping them informed on hiking, walking and mountain biking routes, reports Cape Town Etc.

The app includes 26 hiking trails – 16 of which are international Green Flag Trails, and the first Green Flag mountain bike trails in the world, Knysna-Plett Herald says.

Other than trail information, the app also features maps, distances, updates to trail conditions as well as contact information for officials in the area.

The app will both be compatible on Android and iOS devices.

Tsitsikamma trail gets big facilities upgrade

The Tsitsikamma trail, one of South Africa’s most popular and renowned hiking trails, also recently had a major revamp to provide an even better experience for local and international visitors to the area.

The majority of the upgrades were focused on the facilities within the trail, including the overnight accommodation and communal amenities.

The accommodation revamp included new timber overnight huts, which consists of two-man A-frame units and larger six-person huts, as well as refurbishment of the existing huts.

Communal meeting, cooking and washing facilities were also upgraded to include hot water donkey boilers, showerheads and outdoor showers, as well as solar-powered electricity points with USB and other charging ports. Read more about the revamp here.
