Heatwave warning for five South African provinces

The heatwave conditions in parts of South Africa show no signs of letting up. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said its weather advisory will last until Friday, 7 October, at the very least.

HEATWAVE TO LAST UNTIL FRIDAY

As previously reported, SAWS issued a heatwave advisory for Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Free State on Monday and Tuesday, 4 October.

On Tuesday, the weather service said that the temperatures are expected to see a slight drop on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the heatwave advisory will be extended until Friday, 7 October, in Gauteng, North West, the northern parts of the Free State and places in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

“Keep out of the heat if possible. Stay in the shade, especially between 11:00 and 15:00, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes. Avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter. Stay hydrated (with water),” instructed the weather service.

According to the weather service’s forecast for the most popular cities, Gauteng will be the most affected province, with both Pretoria and Johannesburg recording temperatures in the mid to high 30s this week.

As previously reported, the potential impact of the heatwave could include:

  • Heat stroke.
  • Heat cramps.
  • Heat exhaustion due to prolonged exposure or physical activities.
