The grass is greener: Cape Town stadium to install a new pitch

The City of Cape Town’s DHL Stadium will be getting a brand new pitch next year. Here are all the details…

According to a statement from the City of Cape Town, DHL Stadium will be getting a new pitch that will be a “combination of artificial and natural grass – offering greater stabilisation and the most recent technology in pitch design, to ensure that the stadium remains aligned to the very best international benchmarks for both rugby and soccer”.

Lesley De Reuck, the Cape Town Stadium CEO, said that the pitch would contribute to their ongoing success.

“The new pitch will ensure we remain on a par with the best stadiums in the world, and continue to attract showcase events like the Vodacom URC Final, HSBC 7s, Monster Jam and international artists, contributing to our ongoing success.” De Reuck said.

The new pitch will also enable the stadium to have a speedier turnaround time for concerts, says tourism update, as the more resilient pitch would now require less recovery time. This would undoubtedly result in fewer potential date conflicts between concerts that are generally hosted during the week and sporting events over the weekends at the DHL Stadium. 

The work on the pitch is expected to take place between July and October next year.

Rugby Sevens at Cape Town Stadium

The Cape Town stadium also recently played host to the hugely successful Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament in September, which was big boost for Cape Town tourism

This eighth edition of the tournament was hosted for the first time by an African country in its three-decade history, and fans came out to the DHL Stadium in their THOUSANDS.

The tournament attracted more than 105 000 spectators – a new tournament record, according to tourism update. This figure breaks the previous record numbers set at the 2018 Rugby Sevens, which took place in San Francisco.
