BRICS to help support more air connectivity

The BRICS Aviation Working Group conference also took place this week and has set out to encourage more air connectivity and expansion.

The BRICS Summit brought with it the BRICS Aviation Working Group conference, which ended this week with a passionate commitment to encouraging cooperation, connectivity and long-term expansion in the aviation industry, reports Travel News.

Mpumi Mpofu, Chair of the Aviation Working Group, said that the conference was important for advancing the aviation industry’s function as a driver of economic growth and regional integration.

“This conference was a turning point in advancing the aviation industry’s function as a driver of economic growth and regional integration, with a focus on forging cooperation among the BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa,” Mpofu, who is also CEO of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), said.

Mpofu also then highlighted the important effect of tourism in creating socio-economic development across BRICS economies, emphasising the sector’s capacity to support various economic sectors.

Interventions for air connectivity discussed

At the conference, the Group focused their efforts on specific interventions that will help foster air connectivity between the BRICS countries. These interventions included: 

• Strengthening airport infrastructure, which includes modernising terminals, expanding runways, and deploying advanced technologies to enhance passenger experience and efficiency,
• Advancing aircraft manufacturing cooperation,
• Elevating aircraft servicing and maintenance,
• Enabling technical training programmes and
• Fostering supporting industries.
