What to do in Paarl

From its magnificent architecture and history-soaked museums to its red wine route and stunning landscapes, Paarl has the ability to charm just about anyone.

Visit a wine cellar 

Why you should visit: The wine route through Paarl is known as the Red Route, as this landscape lends itself to those varietals, which you can celebrate by visiting your pick of over 25 wine cellars including; Backsberg Estate, KWV, Nederburg, Nelsons Creek, Simonsvlei, and Avondale.

The Taal Monument

Why you should visit: The impressive Taal Monument was built in 1975 by architect Jan van Wijk to acknowledge the influence that other languages have had on the development of Afrikaans. 

How to get there: Find the monument on Gabbema Doordrift Street.

Paarl Museum

Why you should visit: The Paarl Museum, housed in a u-shaped Cape Dutch house, is home to an in-depth look at the town’s history and culture; from early man to European colonisation and slavery. 

How much does it cost: Admissions cost R5 per person. 

Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve 

Why you should visit: For stunning fynbos-filled landscapes, barbeque (braai) and picnic areas, the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is not to be missed. Also visit the sedately beautiful Mill Water Wild Flower Garden, which is home to 15 species of Protea; South Africa’s national flower. The more supple can climb Bretagne Rock and, from there, follow one of the many walking trails.

How much does it cost: Entrance on weekdays are free but a cover of R30 per vehicle is charged on weekends and public holidays.
