Along South Africa’s superabundant Garden Route sits the resplendent city of George. The second largest city in the Western Cape, George is positioned almost providentially between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, making it an ideal vacation stop on your Garden Route adventure.

Named after the then reigning monarch, King George III, the town was first established as a city in 1811 and has a history deeply steeped in the timber and forestry industries. Fast forward a few hundred years and the city is now the business and tourist hub of the Garden Route.

The majestic Outeniqua Mountains form an impressive backdrop amongst the lush forest and farmlands surrounding the area. Outeniqua, which is Khoi for “they who bear honey”, derives its name from a Khoisan tribe that once inhabited the mountains and used to collect honey from the bees that fed on the wildflowers that grew there.

With its abundance of natural beauty, George certainly offers many exciting outdoor activities but if you want to spend a little time indoors, there are plenty of cultural, historical and gastronomic hotspots within the city to try out.

What to do in George

George is often regarded as a golfers paradise, given the many golf courses on offer. If golf isn’t what you’re visiting George for, there are many activities to partake in in this lush Garden Route town.
