WEATHER: Very wet, cold and windy conditions expected in these parts of South Africa TODAY

Severe weather alerts

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. Yellow Level 3 Warning for Disruptive Rain resulting in flooding of roads, low-lying bridges and informal settlements is expected over the south-western parts of the Western Cape.

B. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Waves resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay from the afternoon into Friday.

ADVISORIES:

A well-defined cold front with upper air support is expected to make landfall on Thursday (25/05/2023), dropping the daytime temperatures significantly. Maximum temperatures may be 10oC and below in places over the southern high-lying areas of the Namakwa region in the Northern Cape and over the interior of the Western Cape, reaching the Eastern Cape Thursday into Friday morning. General cold, wet, and windy conditions will accompany the cold front.

Gauteng

Temperature: Morning fog patches in the north, otherwise fine and cool to warm.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Morning fog patches in the north-west, otherwise fine and warm.

Limpopo

Temperature: Cloudy with morning fog in the central-southern parts, becoming fine and cool to warm.

North West

Temperature: Fine, windy and warm, becoming partly cloudy over the central and western parts in the afternoon.

Free State

Temperature: Fine at first, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, except in the north-east.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in places, becoming cloudy over the central parts in the afternoon.

Wind: Light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh north to north-westerly.

Western Cape

Temperature: Cloudy and cold with widespread rain in the south-west spreading eastwards over the interior and south-coast by the morning otherwise scattered showers and rain.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong west to south-westerly but north-westerly along the west coast at first.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Low.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cool in the south, otherwise partly cloudy, warm and windy, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north and east, but scattered along the coast and adjacent interior in the evening.

The Western half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be Light to moderate westerly, but fresh to strong south-westerly in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: Warm in the north and east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the west in the afternoon, spreading east in the evening.

The Eastern half – Wind: Windy conditions can be expected in the northern interior. The wind along the coast will be Moderate north-easterly, but light north-westerly south of Coffee Bay, becoming moderate south-westerly midday, but fresh to strong in the afternoon, spreading east.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Partly cloudy in the north, otherwise fine and warm.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be Moderate north-easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Very High.
