A hyena chased a topi to exhaustion and started eating it while it was still alive. The main reason they do this is to avoid having a larger predator steal their kill – especially wild dogs who are vulnerable to having both hyenas and lions steal their prey. As a result, they eat their prey as soon and as fast as possible- by the time the animal dies, it has likely been half-eaten.
