WEATHER: Severe thunderstorms, HAIL and heavy RAIN expected in these parts

Shorts and slops or an umbrella? Here’s what the weather holds for every province in South Africa on Thursday, 12 October 2023.

Severe weather alerts

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. Yellow level 4 warning: Severe Thunderstorms with heavy downpours and strong damaging winds, resulting in localized damage to formal and informal settlements, strictural damage (bridges, car ports, etc.) are expected over parts of KwaZulu- Natal, except the extreme northern parts.

B. Yellow level 2 warning: Severe Thunderstorms with possible strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail, and heavy downpours resulting in localized flooding are expected over the south-eastern parts of Northern Cape, south-western parts of North-West Province, western parts of Free State and eastern parts of Eastern Cape.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

A. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the eastern part of the North West Province.

Conditions and UVB forecast

Gauteng

Temperature: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but cloudy in the extreme south where it will be cool

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thunder- showers over the Highveld from the afternoon.

Limpopo

Temperature: Fine in the north-east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-western parts.

North West

Temperature: Cloudy, windy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thunder- showers, but isolated in the east.

Free State

Temperature: Cloudy, windy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thunder- showers.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Partly cloudy in the west, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the east. A chance of Light drizzle is expected along the coast in the morning.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north- westerly.

Western Cape

Temperature: Morning fog patches in the west, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain, except in the extreme north.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north to north- westerly along the south west coast in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh west to south-westerly. It will be strong in places along the south coast in the afternoon.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Very High.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy and cool with a scattered showers and thundershowers.

The Western half – The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly east of oyster bay at first, otherwise moderate to fresh north- westerly, becoming fresh to strong south-westerly in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the south-west.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, but north-westerly in places, becoming moderate westerly from the west in the afternoon, becoming fresh along the wild coast in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Cloudy and warm, but cool in the south-west with i isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the extreme south.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south- westerly south of Richard’s Bay until mid-day, otherwise moderate to fresh north-easterly north of Richard’s bay

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Low.
