WEATHER: Isolated rain, severe fire risks and heatwaves expected in SA

Shorts and slops or an umbrella? Here’s what the weather holds for every province in South Africa on Thursday, 5 October 2023.

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Northern Cape interior, the western part of the Free State and North West, south-western Bushveld in Limpopo and in places over the Kwa-Zulu Natal interior.

ADVISORIES:

Heatwave conditions resulting in persistently high temperatures are expected over the eastern parts of both the North-West and Free State, Gauteng as well as OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo District Municipality of the Eastern Cape until at least Friday (06/10/23). Under these condition, a prolong exposure to the midday sun poses health risks, hence it’s advisable to seek shades and keep hydrated.

Gauteng

Temperature: Fine and hot.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Extreme

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Fine and hot.

Limpopo

Temperature: Fine and hot.

North West

Temperature: Fine and hot.

Free State

Temperature: Fine and hot.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Morning fog patches expected along the coast where it will be cool, otherwise fine and hot to very hot, but partly cloudy in the west.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly.

Western Cape

Temperature:Early morning fog patches along the coast and adjacent interior where it will be cloudy and cool, otherwise partly cloudy and warm. It will be hot in places over the central Karoo.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly along the south-west coast, becoming southerly to southeasterly in the afternoon, while strong south of Table Bay from late afternoon, reaching near-gale between Gansbaai and Hout Bay.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Morning fog patches in places, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, but hot in the north. It will become cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the afternoon, but scattered showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior.

The Western half – The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north- easterly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: Morning fog patches in places along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers south of the escarpment, but cloudy and windy in places

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north- easterly, becoming moderate to fresh south-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Partly cloudy in places in the east, otherwise fine and warm to hot but very hot in places over the interior.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly south of Mandeni at times, otherwise moderate to fresh north-easterly
