WEATHER: Extreme fire risks, persistent heatwaves and foggy conditions expected in SA

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the interior of Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape, the Central Karoo District Municipality in the Western Cape, as well as the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Raymond Mhlaba, Inxuba Yethemba and Enoch Mgijima Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape, where it will persist until Thursday(31/08/2023).

ADVISORIES:

A. Heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected over the Amathole District Municipality, Sunday River Valley, Makana and Ndlambe Local Municipalities of the Eastern Cape, until Thursday (31/08/2023).

B. Significantly reduced visibility due to fog resulting in difficulty in driving conditions in places expected over the extreme southern and south-western parts of Limpopo, Highveld of Mpumalanga, as well as the eastern Highveld of Gauteng.

Gauteng

Temperature: Morning fog patches on the Highveld, otherwise fine and cool.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Very High.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Morning fog patches on the Highveld, otherwise fine and cool.

Limpopo

Temperature: Cloudy in the north-east with morning drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool, but warm in the extreme south-east where morning fog patches can be expected, including the central parts.

North West

Temperature: Fine and cool to warm.

Free State

Temperature: Fine and cool to warm.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Morning and evening fog along the coast where it will be cloudy at times, otherwise fine and cool to warm, but hot in places in the east, with windy conditions over the central parts.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-westerly.

Western Cape

Temperature: Morning and evening fog patches along the west and south-west coast where it will be cloudy at times, spreading to the south coast towards the evening, otherwise fine and cool to warm, but hot over the eastern interior and eastern parts of the south coast.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-westerly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Fine and warm, but hot in places in the south.

The Western half – The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly from the west in the evening.

The Eastern half: Hot in places along the coast, otherwise fine and warm, but cool north of the escarpment.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-easterly, reaching fresh in places.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Fine and warm.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.
