WEATHER: Damaging waves and showers expected to hit multiple parts of SA

Shorts and slops or an umbrella? Here’s what the weather holds for every province in South Africa on Sunday, 17 September 2023.

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange Level 5 Warning for Damaging Waves resulting in difficulty in navigation, damage to coastal infrastructure, beach erosion and possible rogue waves is expected along the Plettenberg Bay and Port Edward.

B. Yellow Level 4 warning for Damaging Waves resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and ports for a short period of time is expected between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

C. Yellow Level 2 warning for Damaging Waves resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Port Edward and Richards Bay.

Conditions and UVB forecast

Gauteng

Temperature: Fine and warm but hot in the extreme north.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Extreme.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Cloudy in the east with morning fog patches and drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm but fine in the extreme west.

Limpopo

Temperature: Cloudy in the east with morning fog patches in drizzle over the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm but fine in the south-west where it will be hot.

North West

Temperature: Fine, and warm to hot.

Free State

Temperature: Fine, and cool to warm.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Partly cloudy in the west at first, otherwise fine, and cool, but cold to very cold in places in the south.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly but strong north of Port Nolloth.

Western Cape

Temperature: Cloudy and cool to cold becoming fine over the northern parts by the afternoon as well as southern parts in the evening.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south to south-easterly but strong north-westerly along the south-coast becoming moderate to fresh west to south-west from late morning. It will moderate to light westerly to south-westerly along the south-coast towards the end of the period.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Low.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy in places in the south with isolated showers along the coast in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool becoming fine.

The Western half – The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly.

The Eastern half: Morning frost in the north, otherwise fine and cool but partly cloudy in the south-east at first.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Morning fog patches over western interior, otherwise cloudy and cool to cold but warm in the extreme north-west, with isolated showers and rain except in the west and extreme south.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-westerly,but south-easterly in the north.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Extreme.
