Warning issued for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rain in THESE provinces

Shorts and slops or an umbrella? Here’s what the weather holds for every province in South Africa on Monday, 9 October 2023.

Severe weather alerts

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. A Yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of susceptible settlements, roads, low-lying areas and bridges is expected along the coast between Port Alfred and Port Edward of the Eastern Cape until and including Tuesday (10 October).

B. A Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with possible strong to damaging winds, and large amounts of small hail is expected over the eastern parts of Free State, and the central and south-eastern parts of North West province

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the western and southern parts of North West, in places over the Free State, the northern and north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the extreme south-western parts of Gauteng.

Conditions and UVB forecast

Gauteng

Temperature: Cloudy in places in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and warm with isolated evening thundershowers in the south.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Morning drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and warm with morning fog patches along the escarpment and eastern Highveld, becoming partly cloudy in the west in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected on the southern Highveld in the evening.

Limpopo

Temperature: Morning fog patches along the escarpment with morning drizzle and light rain in the east where it will be cool, otherwise cloudy and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy in the west in the afternoon.

North West

Temperature: Fine in the west at first, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme west

Free State

Temperature: Cloudy in the extreme east at first with fog patches, otherwise partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over the central and eastern parts.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Partly cloudy in the north-east where it will be windy and hot, otherwise fine and warm to cool. It will be cloudy along the coast with morning fog patches.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly to south-westerly.

Western Cape

Temperature: Cloudy in the east with isolated showers and rain along the south coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm but fine in the west.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-westerly along the west coast, otherwise moderate to fresh south-easterly to easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy and cool to cold with isolated showers and rain but scattered to widespread along the coast and adjacent interior.

The Western half – The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly, becoming easterly in the evening.

The Eastern half: Partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers north of the escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to cold with scattered showers and rain but widespread along the coast.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate north-easterly, becoming fresh to strong easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south. It will be warm in the north.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be light south-easterly in the early morning, otherwise moderate north-easterly, freshening in the afternoon.
