Disruptive snow again! Cold and wet weather conditions expected in most parts of the country

Shorts and slops or an umbrella? Here’s what the weather holds for every province in South Africa on Thursday, 20 July 2023.

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. A yellow level 2 warning: Disruptive snow leading to dangerous driving conditions and loss of vulnerable livestock is expected over the central and northern high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape and the south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

NIL

ADVISORIES:

Very cold and wet conditions on the high-lying areas are expected over the Eastern Cape, the central and western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, eastern Free State and southern Highveld of Mpumalanga Province and these conditions are likely to persist until Friday.

Conditions and UVB forecast

Gauteng

Temperature: Cold in the south, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.

Mpumalanga

Temperature: Cool in the Lowveld, otherwise cloudy and cold to very cold with isolated showers and rain.

Limpopo

Temperature: Cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain in the east.

North West

Temperature: Partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Free State

Temperature: Partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the west but cloudy in the east with snowfall in the extreme east where it will be very cold.

Northern Cape

Temperature: Fine and cold to cool, but very cold in the south where it will be cloudy at first, becoming partly cloudy in the east by the afternoon.

Wind: – The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly.

Western Cape

Temperature: Fine and cool, but partly cloudy over the eastern parts where it will be cold.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-easterly to easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Low.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Partly cloudy and cold to very cold with isolated showers and showers and rain, but scattered along the coast in the morning, clearing from the west. Snowall is expected over the high-lying areas.

The Western half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate southwesterly early morning, otherwise moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly.

The Eastern half: Partly cloudy in the north-west, otherwise cloudy and cold to very cold with isolated showers and rain but scattered along the coast and adjacent interior. Snowfall is expected over the high-lying areas.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate south-westerly to southerly, becoming north-easterly in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal

Temperature: Very cold in the west with snowfall on the Drakensberg mountains, otherwise cloudy and cold with scattered showers and rain but widespread along the coast.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.
