WEATHER: Heatwave and veld fires expected today in these parts

HEATWAVE, damaging winds, and veld fire conditions are expected in these provinces today. 

HEATWAVES, WINDS, AND VELD FIRES ARE EXPECTED ON SATURDAY

According to the SA Weather Service (SAWS) the following areas will all be affected on Saturday by these conditions: 

“When temperature is extremely high, human’s ability to cool their bodies through sweating is reduced. This can be a real threat that leads to hyperthermia. People and animals can get heat exhaustion, heat stroke, faintness, dry skin and dehydration.”

THE HEATWAVE CONDITIONS COULD AFFECT THE FOLLOWING AREAS

The SAWS issued a heatwave weather advisory to the following areas: 

• Beaufort West
• Prince Albert
• Laingsburg
• Oudtshoorn
• Kannaland
• Ladismith

“People and animals can get heat exhaustion, heat stroke, faintness, and dehydration.”

The SAWS advised the public to hydrate frequently, wear cool clothing, avoid being in the sun for prolonged periods, and avoid strenuous outside work.

THE PUBLIC WAS ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS IF POSSIBLE

The public was advised to stay indoors and away from the windows that open toward the severe winds.

“Be aware of the following: – sudden cross winds if traveling, especially between buildings, fallen trees or power lines, and flying debris. 

“Small boats must stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour, river estuary, or protected bay. Ensure that all temporary structures are well anchored.”

A WARNING FOR VELD FIRE CONDITIONS WAS ALSO ISSUED

Meanwhile, the SAWS also issued a warning for veld fire conditions in these areas: 

• Khâi-Ma / Pofadder
• Hantam / Calvinia
• Beaufort West
• Karoo Hoogland / Sutherland
• Laingsburg

The SAWS advised that fire teams are on standby.

“Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly, resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life.”
