The lioness that escaped in Tlakgameng in the North West earlier this week has been shot dead.

According to reports, the provincial environment and conservation department confirmed that the lioness was located and killed earlier on Friday morning.
The South African reported on Thursday that the lioness escaped from her container while being transported on the back of a bakkie from Stella to a game farm in Tlakgameng.

It is believed the search teams headed back to look for the lioness on Friday morning.
A local farmer spotted the lioness near his premises and notified the owner of its location, but before then decided to shoot the lioness before the owner’s arrival.
The spokesperson for the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Jerry Matebesi, said because the lioness was roaming around near residential areas, the call was made to shoot and kill it.

Last month Sheba the tiger escaped from her enclosure in Midvaal on Saturday, 14 January. The tiger attacked 37-year-old William Mokoena and killed his dog and a pig at the weekend.
The eight-year-old exotic pet of Midvaal resident Rassie Erasmus was euthanised when the tigress was caught in a massive search hunt.
