Barry Hilton puts South Africans to the test

Following the indignation over Ryanair’s Afrikaans test prerequisite for passengers flying with them, South African comedian Barry Hilton decided to create his own ‘test’ on how to prove ones South African-ness. He posted his 14 hilarious questions on Facebook last week, with side-splitting results.

On the Facebook post, Hilton said: My Afrikaans is limited but I think I’ve managed to translate the Ryan Air questionnaire being given to South African passport holders! What do you think?

These are the questions that followed:

  • 1. What’s is a poephol?
  • 2. How long should you leave a rusk in coffee?
  • 3. What is another word for a box?
  • 4. What would you call a homeless person on Table Mountain?
  • 5. How long do you still have after a robot turns red
  • 6. What education level do you need to be a political candidate in South Africa?
  • 7. Explain the difference between a braai and a barbecue
  • 8. How many people can you fit into a commuter taxi ?
  • 9. Is Boerewors a sausage or part of a Boer?
  • 10. What is another name for a cat?
  • 11. How is travel distance measured in South Africa
  • 12. Complete the sentence: I gave him a ……….klap
  • 13. Is a bunny chow a vegetable?
  • 14. Is Tik the first sound a clock makes?

South Africans react

The post garnered many reactions and comments, with South Africans responding in typical good-humoured SA fashion, most even saying they could definitely answer all the questions asked!

Christelle Buys commented:

“Also add:

Complete the following sentences:
1. Oom Cyril calls us ‘ his fellow-…..?’
2. Hugo, bel die …..?”

While David Kusner said:

“LOL the truth is, this is a much better test that will most definitely weed out the real South African from the fake one!!! #Ryanair”

So, how many can you answer correctly?
