If you’re a registered student at a South African university, college or similar and have a social issue you would like to document, now’s your chance.

The first step on your path to the R10 000 first prize is to read the competition details below and fill in the entry form.

Competition title: South African Social Issues
Guidelines: The boundaries of documentary filmmaking continue to expand, we accept all forms and styles as long as they are nonfiction and document an aspect of reality around social issues in South Africa today. Find your subject, document it.
Time: Minimum 5 minutes, maximum 10 minutes including credits
Prize money: 1st prize – R10 000, 2nd prize – R5 000

Submission deadline: 31 May 2023
Finalists announced: 5 June 2023
Public voting: 5-30 June 2023
Winner announced: 30 June 2023

Technical guidelines:
● Your submission’s total runtime must not exceed the specified time limit for the category you are submitting. Credit runtime must not exceed 30 seconds.
● We strongly recommend that you triple check your audio levels and that your audio is not limited to one channel (ie: right or left).
● Any film that includes main dialogue that is not English must be submitted with English subtitles packaged into the submitted video file. Standalone .srt files are not accepted.
● When uploading your submission, you must use the following file naming conventions: FirstNameLastName_FilmTitle.mp4
● We will only except the file formats listed below: .MP4 or .MOV
● Do not submit films in 4K. Please submit your film in 1080 HD resolution. Any film files that are larger than 2GBs will not be accepted.
● Do not submit using a YouTube link as they cannot be downloaded. Any submissions with a YouTube link will not be considered for selection or screening.

Content guidelines:
All music, images, titles, footage and other copyrighted material used in your submission must be correctly licensed. You must have permission and/or the proper rights to all content submitted.

Eligibility guidelines:
The film’s director(s) must be a registered student at a South African college, university or similar.

T&C’:
● The copyright of all content submitted is shared. Blue Sky Publications has the right to use and publish the content as required.
● The judges decision is final. The judging panel is made up of AFDA and Blue Sky Publications employed personnel and other independently selected individuals.
