U.S beats out United Kingdom

A recent report from SA Tourism shows that the US has officially bested the UK for being the number one source country for international visitors in 2021. The UK, of course, has held this top spot since 1994, and still remains one of South Africa’s top source markets, just not number one since last year.

Last year, the US also topped tourist revenue from overseas sources, recording R2.3 billion in spend from this market. The data also showed a 14 percent increase in arrivals when compared to 2020.

Jerry Mpufane, president of South African Tourism North America Hub said that the report indicated that the diligent marketing and promotional efforts for South Africa were definitely paying off.

“South Africa continues to win coveted travel and hospitality accolades, which go a long way in establishing confidence in what we have to offer. When you couple that with increased connectivity provided by our airline partners at United and Delta and the consistent energy and enthusiasm for the destination shown by US travel advisers and tour operators, the future looks bright as we continue our recovery efforts.” Mpufane said.

The report claimed that South Africa was a top bucket-list destination among U.S travelers, loved for its world-class travel, a wide variety of experiences, like exclusive game reserves, and affordable-luxury accommodation options.

Some other reasons for South Africa being such a draw to U.S tourists was the fact that the country is so rich in active adventure, cultural, and historical offerings. The country also puts tourists centre stage as they are immersed in the food, language, history and arts and culture while also offering top-end wildlife, beach, and active adventure experiences that include the great outdoors, hiking trails, driving along the coastline, and other thrilling experiences.

First-time travellers made up the bulk of arrivals

The report also revealed the tourist profile and trends taken from the South African Tourism’s Departure Survey, which indicated that the US market was and continues to be mainly driven by first-time travelers, who are under the age of 45 years and are looking to explore our beautiful nation on holiday for a week or two.
