According to VoxWeather forecaster Annette Botha said a mid-winter cut-off low would bring widespread showers, a steep drop in temperatures, and SNOW across the country.

“Sleet or freezing rain in the Northern Cape around Prieska and Postmasburg are expected from Tuesday evening late into Wednesday.”

On Wednesday morning, light snow mixed with some showers from expected in the Free State, around Bloemfontein, and over the mountains around Ficksburg, Clarens, and surrounding areas.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that some road networks and mountain passes connecting communities on the southern Drakensberg in the Eastern Cape could be closed on Thursday.
“This follows the potential disruptive snow on the roads and railways, especially during the morning hours. Areas of potential impact include Molteno, Barkley East, Lady Grey, and Matatitele, and there could be isolated loss of livestock in this northern region.
“Counterparts of the South African Weather Service in Lesotho have issued a forecast for bitterly cold temperatures with heavy snowfall over Lesotho, and these conditions may spill over to QwaQwa in the north-eastern Free State.”

She furthermore said SIGNIFICANT snow of more than 10cm is likely on Wednesday over Lesotho and the southern Drakensberg continuing into Thursday morning.
