    14 public holidays this year

Us South Africans love our public holidays, so many will be excited to learn that in 2023, there will be two extra public holidays to enjoy.

According to the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 (Act) there will be 14 public holidays in 2023, two more than the 12 public holidays that are usually determined.

As reported by Cape Town Etc, 2 January and 25 September are the two additional SA public holidays in 2023, one to observe New Year’s Day and one for Heritage Day, both of which fall on a Sunday.

The Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 (Act) claims that “whenever any public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday.” As per this SA law, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, it will still be regarded as a public holiday, but the Monday following that public holiday will then become an additional public holiday.

The 14 South African public holidays for 2023 are as follows:

    • New Year’s Day – Sunday, 1 January 2023
    • New Year’s Day observed – Monday, 2 January 2023
    • Human Rights Day – Tuesday, 21 March 2023
    • Good Friday – Friday, 7 April 2023
