The town of Stellenbosch, or ‘Stellies’ as it’s affectionately known, is launching a brand new tourism recovery campaign, called Stay Stellenbucks.
Modelled after the hugely successful Support Stellenbosch campaign that was launched in 2020 to drive the recovery of the town’s travel and tourism industry, the ‘Stay Stellenbucks’ campaign aims to be just as beneficial for tourism in the area.
The new Stay Stellenbucks initiative forms part of the town’s Stay and Play campaign, which is a collaboration between tourism stakeholders and private donors like Stellenbosch University, Capitec, Remgro, Investec, Mergon, and auditing company LDP.
According to Tourism Update, the campaign plans to not only boost visitor numbers for the town, thereby increasing economic recovery, it also focuses particularly on accommodation establishments.
Jeanneret Momberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch, said that the initiative aims to encourage visitors to experience the town like a local.
“June to September is our lower season traditionally, which affords us an opportunity to extend visitors a great incentive to stay and play in Stellenbosch,” she said.
“We also have an exciting line-up of events and we encourage visitors to go beyond the half day to experience Stellenbosch and surrounds like a local. These events are being hosted under the themes of art and culture, music, outdoor concerts, social justice events, bespoke culinary festivals, walking tours and, of course, ample wine-tasting attractions, including the annual Wine Town Stellenbosch.” she added.
The campaign essentially works by rewarding visitors with “Stellenbucks” that they are allowed to use at establishments around town. Visitors who stay two nights or longer (T&Cs apply) in one of the participating accommodation establishments, will receive Stellenbucks coupons to the value of 20% of their accommodation bill (to a maximum of R1 200). These coupons can be redeemed at any participating winery, restaurant, experience provider or accommodation establishment in Stellies.
