The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) issued a coastline alert for the Eastern Cape and Southern Cape on Wednesday, 25 May after a recent sighting of a large shark and increased activity.

LARGE SHARK SPOTTED AT JEFFREYS BAY

The large shark was spotted at Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday, said the NSRI. It was seen in the breaking surfline at Secrets Beach near Commercial Marine.

All the surfers in the sea at the time of the sighting cleared the water safely.

“Over the past weeks and more recently increased shark activity has been noticed along the Southern Cape coastline from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay and the Eastern Cape coastline from Storms River, Tsitsikamma, to Jeffreys Bay,” said the Institute.

Residents of local municipalities are asked to exercise caution along the aforementioned stretches of the coastline due to the marked increase in activity.

Exactly a week ago, on the evening of Wednesday, 18 May, the NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew spotted a Great White in the Keurbooms River.

As previously reported, the Great White measured approximately 3,5 metres in length. It was seen 300 metres upstream from the Keurbooms River mouth, which is halfway between the mouth and the N2 bridge.

Marine scientists attached to the South African Shark Incident Committee believe the cartilaginous fish may have been ill or disorientated.
