Kenya Airways and South African Airways (SAA) recently signed a codeshare agreement in a bid to open up more African destinations for travellers.

“More options and more flights” says Kenya Airways

The new codeshare agreement signed by both SAA and Kenya Airways, will allow travellers to combine flight segments and baggage on a single ticket and each airline will also be able sell flights operated by each other, under its own flight code.

Passengers travelling out of South Africa will also have more options to travel to African destinations, which include Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Entebbe, Mombasa and Kisumu. In the same way, Kenya Airways passengers will have more choices for travel into Southern Africa including Cape Town, Durban and Harare.

More codeshare destinations are being assessed between the partners and will be announced shortly, but according to Tourism Update, unconfirmed news reports say that some of the additional destinations could be Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Douala, Lusaka, and destinations in Ghana and Nigeria, subject to those countries’ government approval.

Kenya Airways CEO and Group MD, Allan Kilavuka, said that the airline was very pleased to implement the codeshare with SAA, as it will offer shared customers more options and flight combinations.

“The additional destinations we believe will offer a better customer journey thanks to the number of frequencies and connections created as well as many opportunities for trade and tourism.” Kilavuka added.

The month of July also saw SAA increase capacity along South Africa’s trunk domestic routes in a bid to keep up with local flight demand.

The airline assigned most of its reserve capacity to flight services on South Africa’s main domestic routes, as well as to Mauritius, in the wake of Comair’s recent collapse. The carrier doubled its mid-week flights to Cape Town from Johannesburg and to Mauritius, while also increasing the number of flights into Durban by up to 67%.
